Moving on
Explorer Members
When you reach the age of 18 you are an adult, it is time to move on. You may be an Explorer member, or you may be a Young Leader, but to continue as a member of the Scout Association and to participate in the Award Scheme, you will need to join Network. You may join Network at any time after you reach 17½, but Network does not encourage young members to leave Explorers until their 18th birthday because to do so, depletes Explorers of their senior members when they are most valuable as a resource to that group.
There are other options when you reach 18. You may take out a leader warrant and continue your Scouting as a warranted leader or helper, but unless you also join Network, you will no longer be able to continue your awards such as Queen's Scout, Explorer Belt or the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Another option is to join Fellowship, but again you will not be able to continue with the awards, and you may be missing out on the activity and social basis of Network.
To join Network, you need to go to the Network Section on the web site, and register on-line from the tab at the foot of the sub-index on that page. Once thus registered, you are a member of Network, and in registering you will have elected to join the Network group geographically nearest to you. To see a full list of the current Network groups in the County, hit the link at the bottom of the Network sub-index that points to Local Networks and you will see them all there, together with contact details.
If you have already started one or more of the awards, you will find that Network will enable you to continue with what you have started, exactly where you left off. Network is actively promoting all three main awards, as well as having a social and activity based programme, organised by the members themselves under a Network Leader. Network is also actively promoting activity leadership training in Hills, Mountains, Abseiling, Potholing, Kayaking, Sailing, Archery, Mountain Biking and more.
As you will be over 18, your Network Leader will see that you are CRB'd in accordance with Scout policy, and you are then able to continue helping out in other sections, if that is what you have been doing, which you would be unable to do without that certificate.
If you find yourself going off to University, Network will put you in touch with the Network group local to wherever you are going. Once you join Network, you join not a District organisation, or even a County organisation, Network is National, and joining Network gives you access and welcome to any Network group in the Country.
Scouting is fun, and Network continues that ... !!
