County Conference update

Reports from the Annual Conference, February 3rd, 2007
Jeremy Cotton
The Conference opened with a report from Chairman, Miles Matile, who welcomed the 80+ delegates who had come to the meeting, and ran through some of the successes of Scouting 2006 in the County, including early census reports that demonstrated a growth of about 3% in numbers over the year.

Steve Baddeley presented the programmes for the celebration of 100 years of Scouting 2007 within the County, and the Jamboree contingent gave an inspiring view of their preparations for the Centenary Jamboree at Highlands Park in July/August this year.

Nigel Cobb with the help of the ACC's presented the Best in Scouting for each section that ran though till coffee break.

Tony Cadwallader, Network Commissioner, demonstrated the effectiveness of the Network Units that had set up in the County, the members role in assisting Sections as part of their award scheme, as well as the potential for involving themselves in Activity Training that would filter back into local Groups as skill leaders to help make sure that all members of Scouting would have an opportunity to get into the hills or on to the water each year. He then was pleased to present 6 members of Network who had gained their Queens Scout award in the last month, and Jeremy Cotton, County Commissioner then presented them with their Certificates and badges.

Those presented were:-

James Sheldon - Network Leader Moorlands
Phil Hassell - Moorlands
Vu Nguyen - Moorlands
James Ireland - Network Coordinator Burton

David Sheldon and Mark Hassell were also awarded but could not attend and will be presented by their own District Commissioner from Moorlands, Graham Alcock, at the earliest opportunity.

Alex Sutton, ACC Fellowship, gave a run down of the role and membership of Fellowship, highlighting the involvement of Fellowship at all levels and activities in the County, and demonstrated how Fellowships could be generated at Group, District and County level to provide service in Scouting, which was open to all uniformed, non uniformed as well as parents and helpers.

Jeremy Cotton, after lunch spoke about the further development and best practice in County Scouting, praising the efforts of all Leaders, and encouraging members to share best practice in order to spread better and more exciting delivery of programme to the members.
Delegates
David Johnson, ACC Activities, ran through the Activities Training programmes now becoming available, and Janet Lord and Paula Evans bravely extolled the improvements that they were putting into place for Leader Training, making TA's more available as well as putting into place local Training Managers to help out, with surgeries for new applicants where there was difficulty getting TA's together with new Leader recruits.

The Conference closed just before 4.00pm, after a talk by Paul Hegarty of Coors, about PR, communications and marketing our movement with the opportunity that the Centenary year presented.
